The following is Anita Gilvesy's report from Investing in Children's Annual General Meeting on June 17, 2009.

I hope that all of you are as proud as I am that Investing in Children has reached this milestone year. Our role in the community grows stronger with each passing year as we continue to demonstrate strong leadership, responsive and innovative programming while maintaining a clear vision for our children. Our community has also become more aware of what life looks like for children in London. Facts such as 1 in every 5 children born in London today will live in poverty; 1 in 4 will be over weight or obese, more than 1 in 4 are not ready to learn in Grade 1, all paint a clear picture of where Investing in Children can and does make a difference.

This past year saw us deliver 30 Family Literacy Events, participate in National Family Literacy Day, run a successful Book Camp London, match tutors with students in 9 schools to assist in homework completion as well as representation on all three sub committees for the Child and Youth Network. Record attendance was set at our Family Literacy events with an increasing number of schools requesting that we bring these events to their children and families. We had a record number of schools receive funding to support their nutrition programs and that number is increasing for the year ahead.  The number of athletes and their peer mentors competing in the Thames Valley Special Olympics also increased. Participation in Kids First Day, both in terms of partner locations and attendees continued to grow this year. These are but a few of the highlights for the past year.

What are the key factors that have contributed to our success over the years? There are many. It is in having a clear vision that every child should be provided with opportunities to help them reach their potential. It is the passion, compassion and creativity that the staff of Investing in Children demonstrate daily. It is our volunteers, including our Board of Directors, who give tirelessly of their time and energy. It is the community partners and funders that we work with, who share our vision and values. All of these pieces fit together to form this incredible organization called Investing in Children.

It is both an honour and a privilege to serve as the Executive Director of this organization and to work with so many dedicated individuals. Congratulations on making Investing in Children’s 10th Birthday, one to be proud of!

Respectfully Submitted,
Anita Gilvesy
