Volunteer Opportunities
Investing in Children relies on the contributions of volunteers to make these opportunities possible for the children of London and area. We have volunteer opportunities through London and the surrounding area, including weekly programs, special events and administrative tasks.
Volunteering with Investing in Children has many benefits for our volunteers such as developing job skills, making contacts in the community and meeting new friends. High school students can gain valuable experience for university and college applications and complete their 40-hour volunteer requirement.
In The Know Tutoring
Investing in Children will recruit, screen, train and place volunteers into schools that are in need of volunteer assistance throughout the school year.
Once you are in a school, the school staff will work with you to determine where you can help the most and will set up a schedule with you that will work best for you and the school. You might help with 1:1 reading, homework, tutoring, computer or even a brain games club…..whatever the school has the need for.
Volunteers must have a police check completed for this program. Volunteer Commitment is a minimum of one hour weekly throughout the school year.
Family Literacy Events
Investing in Children has developed a series of themed based Family Literacy events that address literacy needs for children grades JK-3 and their families in a fun interactive manner.
The Literacy Events run from 6:00 to 8:00pm at schools located throughout London. We will begin with a theme based story read by the Principal from the school, having the Principal read the story helps to break down barriers for families and create a community environment. A guest speaker will then have a brief presentation for the families based on the theme for the evening.
Following the speaker, the families will move on to an assortment of volunteer-led activities such as language, math, science, gross motor and craft activities all related to the theme of the event.
Families will be provided with refreshments including a theme snack juice and fruit or vegetables. An assortment of take-home materials including activity sheets and resource materials are available for the participants to take and extend learning into the home.
Dates and locations for this program are available from our volunteer coordinator and training will be provided on site. Volunteer commitment is flexible with a minimal commitment of 2 hours.
Special Olympics
Each year, more than 850 athletes with developmental disabilities take part in three days of fun and athletic competitions at the annual Thames Valley Track and Field Event for Special Olympic Athletes at TD Waterhouse Stadium in May. Training will be provided on site.
Students participate in traditional track and field events including sprints, high jump and long jump, as well as special events such as He Shoots, She Scores, the obstacle course and fish pond.
