A Message from the Executive Director

It is hard to believe that the month of June is upon us! Before we know it, children will be out of school and families will be enjoying summer past times. As the school year winds down, we share with you some of our recent successes, including Kids First Day, Special Olympics and our Puppet Workshops. If your children love creative writing and reading, perhaps our Book Camp will be of interest to them!

We would also like to extend an invitation to our 10th Birthday Bash on June 17th at the Barking Frog. It is sure to be an evening filled with good food, entertainment and celebration. Your support over the past 10 years has helped us make a difference in the lives of thousands of children and their families in our community. For that, we thank you.

Enjoy reading our emailer and have a safe and relaxing summer!

Sincerely,
Anita Gilvesy
Executive Director

Kids First Day 2009

On April 24, Investing in Children was pleased to present the biggest and best Kids First Day ever! In total, we counted more than 4,000 child visits to our 58 partner locations, plus an estimated 2,000 adults visits. The passports were a hit again this year, with more than 450 returned to us.

Thank you to all the children and families who took part in Kids First Day, thank you to all of our wonderful Kids First Day partner locations for their participation, and thank you to the Kiwanis Club of Forest City-London and 103.1 Fresh FM for sponsoring the event. And don't forget to mark Friday, April 23, 2010 on your calendar for next year's Kids First Day!

TVDSB Special Olympic Track and Field Event

The weather didn't always cooperate, but for more than 900 students and their peer mentors at the TVDSB Special Olympic Track and Field Event from May 26-29, it was still a great opportunity for physical and personal achievement. Thank you to all the sponsors and supporters of the event, including the Harry E. Foster Foundation, Special Olympics Ontario and TD Bank Financial Group.

Puppet Workshops

In addition to working with Investing in Children, Phil Arnold is a master puppeteer. Over the past three months, he has been sharing those skills with eager school classes through a unique literacy workshop. With an emphasis on storytelling and creativity, the students have learned to develop their own stories and props and create a shadow play.

Leadership Conference

On March 26, more than 100 Grade 6-7 students from TVDSB and LDCSB schools took part in Investing in Children's annual Kids Power Conference. Through a series of workshops presented by community experts, the students learned how to turn their great ideas into real events in their schools and communities, including planning, fundraising, marketing, and inclusion.
