A Message from the
Executive Director
Spring is coming! Looking out
our windows it is hard to believe but rest assured it will
arrive.
Visit Cherryhill Village Mall
for our Book Sale March 13-15. Purchase some gently used books
and spend part of the March Break reading with your child.
Share those treasured moments while teaching your child the
joys of reading!
As you read through our Spring
emailer, I would like to point out our many community partners
who continue to be a part of the work that we do here at Investing
in Children. We appreciate the support of many individuals,
organizations and businesses who believe in social responsibility.
The passion of our work is fueled by the support of our community
and I would like to thank everyone for helping us make a difference
in the lives of children in our community.
Sincerely,
Anita Gilvesy
Executive Director
London
Gets Mugged

Investing in Children
has been known for our Community Art Projects engaging students
in postive art contributions to their community. With London
Gets Mugged, we took that same approach to prominent Londoners,
with the end result being a fantastic art show at Jonathan
Bancroft-Snell Gallery featuring one-of-a-kind unique mugs,
wine tasting, Starbucks lattes and so much more!
Congratulations
to Fire Chief John Kobarda for winning the Audience Choice
Award for his extremely unique design, which can be seen at
the right.
Thank you to everyone
who made London Gets Mugged a success, including Jonathon
Bancroft-Snell Gallery, Starbucks, Michael Buck, Carol at
the Greenware Gallery,
and all of our muggers for their wonderful and creative designs.
Proceeds from London Gets Mugged support Investing in Children's
literacy projects in 2008-09.
And while February
2009 is still a long ways off, London Gets Mugged: Second
Offence has a nice right to it, wouldn't you agree?
Quixtar:
Corporate Social Responsibility
With
spring in the air, Investing in Children's community service
clubs are preparing their annual neighbourhood cleanups in
April. A key supporter of these efforts for many years has
been Quixtar Canada, who provide volunteers, equipment and
leadership for the community club members as they clean up
around their schools.
Quixtar has also been a strong
supporter of Investing in Children's Blue Boxes for Books
program, running book collection drives in their offices.
Quixtar is a strong believer
in Corporate Social Responsibility, and their work with Investing
in Children reflects that commitment.
Deb Matthews
visits a Family Literacy Event

Investing in Children was pleased
to welcome London North Centre MPP Deb Matthews to a recent
Family Literacy Event at Hillcrest Public School. Deb and
her
Children's

round of funding from the Ontario Student Nourishment Program
is Tuesday, June 10, 2008. Please note only schools that are
currently receiving funding are eligible for this application.
The application will be sent out mid-April to all current

March is also Nutrition Month,
and Breakfast for Learning has some resources available:
- Smart Start - Developed and
reviewed by Breakfast for Learning’s Nutrition Education
Committee, Smart Start is a great resource that can be posted
in classrooms, or on the fridge at home, providing a handy
guide to Canada’s Food Guide and the recommended servings
of the four food groups for kids, 4-18 years of age.
- Staying Alive! Game Cards
– New downloadable game cards are available for Staying
Alive! Lost in the Mountains – a nutrition adventure
board game for kids, launched by Breakfast for Learning
last year. The new cards will help keep children engaged
and learning.
These resources can be ordered/downloaded
on the Breakfast for Learning Online Club site – www.breakfastforlearning.ca
– Join the Club.
The Child and Youth Network has
also selected three key issues that we will be working on
as a community. These key priority areas include Poverty,
Literacy and Obesity/Inactivity. |
