Walter Sayers

Twenty two children attended our Book Camp London creative design workshop and reunion on Thursday November 30, 2006 at the central branch of the London Public Library. Walter Sayers, a London based creative illustrator and designer, presented a workshop to the children on how to “bring your creativity to life” though the use of imagination and every day items.

The participants enjoyed a fun filled evening learning about design and getting reacquainted with friends from Book Camp London summer camp.

A Message from the Executive Director

As the holiday season approaches and the year is coming to an end, we would like to extend our sincere thank you to all of you who have supported Investing in Children this past year. Our dedicated volunteers, Board of Directors and community have helped us reach over 13,000 children and their families. I would also like to acknowledge the passionate, energetic staff here at Investing in Children. It is a pleasure to work with individuals who are so dedicated to ensuring that we continue to provide unique opportunities for children.

We have many accomplishments to celebrate from this past year. Highlighted below are just a few of those. As we look forward to 2007, we already have many plans for yet another amazing year.

On behalf of all of us at Investing in Children, we wish you and your family a happy and safe holiday season!

Anita Gilvesy
Executive Director

Old East Village Flag Project

In November, we saw the successful conclusion of a Community Art Project run in partnership with the Old East Village Business Improvement Area, supported by the London Community Foundation, the City of London and several local businesses. The highlights of the project included the student-created banners that hung from the lightposts on Dundas St. between Adelaide and Elizabeth, and an Art Showcase, with works of art from more than 200 students from four neighbouring schools. From the student submissions, 24 were chosen to work with local artist Wanda Sawicki to create the banners, which have provided a welcome and colourful addition to the Old East Village.

Volunteer Recognition

Joel Ready is a volunteer for Investing in Children’s Blue Boxes for Books project. Blue Boxes for Books features recycling boxes filled with children's books placed in strategic locations throughout the city. To date there are over 50 locations. Many of our blue box locations are in dental offices and working as a technician for Patterson Dental, Joel is at many of the locations that have blue boxes and is able to check and refill boxes while waiting to service equipment. Interface Oral Surgery told us “I was surprised one day when the Patterson Dental Repairman refilled the Blue Box-that was a very nice service! Good for them!”

Thanks to volunteers like Joel, Investing in Children is able to continue offering high-quality projects.

#1 Project at Northbrae Public School

In December, Investing in Children will be working with the staff and students at Northbrae Public School on the very unique “#1 Project”, which mixes self-esteem and art in a special way that will enliven the school hallways.

Each of the more than 400 student at the school will participate by identifying what they are number one at. This might be playing soccer, or reading to their younger sister, or collecting Yu Gi Oh cards. Each student will be each be given a wooden #1 to paint, symbolizing what they are #1 at, and a foam core card to write it on.

When all the #1’s have been painted, they will be assembled into four large murals, and hung in various locations throughout Northbrae. The student will be able to see and share their #1 with their friends and families, and they will be part of a legacy showing the multitude of things at which the students in the Northbrae community excel.

Community Service Club Contest

This fall, one of the projects that all 10 of our Community Service Clubs have been involved in a safe schools poster contest, asking students in their schools to design posters highlighting ways to be safe in their schools.

Each club selected one winning poster from their school, and gave the winning student a pair of tickets to the Cheetah Girls concert at the John Labatt Centre on December 12. We would like to thank the John Labatt Centre for contributing the tickets to this contest.
