A Message from the Executive Director

School is back, the colours of fall surround us and we are busy here at Investing in Children providing many exciting opportunities for children in our community. Over the last few weeks, over 200 students participated in our Leadership Camp at Stevenson Children’s Camp. What a wonderful opportunity this was for students to meet new friends and explore team building and leadership initiatives.

Our homework clubs and community service clubs are underway. We are also gearing up for the launch of our Banner Flags and art show during the Old East Village BIA’s Fire and Frost Festival on November 25. We hope that you will take a drive down Dundas Street and see the beautiful flags created by the children in that community and join us for an art show at the Palace Theatre on November 25 from 2-5 pm. There you will see all the entries from the students used in capturing the design elements of the flags.

We also invite you to join us for a preview showing of Disney presents Beauty and the Beast at the Grand Theatre on November 23rd. A theme based reception starting at 7 pm will start the evening off on a magical note. It is a wonderful way to start the holiday season!

Thank you for your continued support of Investing in Children!

Sincerely,
Anita Gilvesy
Executive Director

2006 Youth Leadership Camp

More than 200 students took part in this year’s 11th annual Investing in Children Youth Leadership Camp in September and October. Youth Leadership Camp, held at Stevenson Children’s Camp, develops leadership and teamwork skills in Grade 6 and 7 students from both school boards.

Working in camp groups with students they haven’t met before, the participants tackle physical and mental challenges requiring teamwork, communication, problem solving, decision making and leadership. The students are guided through these tasks by Stevenson Camp counselors, teachers and school support counselors and Investing in Children staff.

Thank you to the Middlesex-London Optimist Club, the London Food Bank, Merrymount Children's Centre, London Hospital Linen Service and Farmer Jack's Orchards for their contributions to Leadership Camp.

Fall Neighbourhood Programs

Investing in Children is also beginning our Homework Clubs and Community Service Clubs in several locations.

Our Community Service Clubs for Grades 3-5 will be held at seven schools, providing students with the chance to engage in community service, meet with guest speakers and undertake unique projects of their own creation. New this year is Stage 2 of our Community Service Clubs at three schools, extending this unique opportunity to students in Grades 6-8. The clubs will be run in the same manner as our Stage 1, however the older students will be empowered to take a leading role in the selection and execution of their projects.

Also this fall, we are offering nine homework clubs in schools and community locations. These clubs provide a quiet, safe and supportive environment for students to complete their homework. Volunteers are available to help students with their work.

Additionally, our Homework Club Toolkit is available for schools and community locations that would like to start their own homework clubs. For more information, please e-mail info@investinginchildren.on.ca.
