Investing in Children is pleased to announce that we have been selected by the London Hyde Park Rotary Club as the charity of choice for their Charity Golf Classic on September 7, 2005 at Westhaven Golf & Country Club. Proceeds from this day on the links will support Investing in Children and Rotary Community Projects.

Camperships

Investing in Children is pleased to a partner with Fanshawe College on two summer camp projects: Cyberkids and Creative Outlets.

CyberCamp, in its third year, enables children to explore leading computer software and develop their multimedia skills.

Creative Outlets is a week-long leadership and personal growth opportunity for kids.

If you or your business would like to provide a "campership" to enable a child to attend either of this camp, please contact Lisa Baxter at 433-8996 ext. 226.

Blue Boxes for Books

Thanks to a grant from the Blackburn Foundation, Investing in Children will be launching a second phase of Blue Boxes for Books. These new boxes will be placed in community locations in the next few months.

If you have books you would like to donate, or if you would like to "adopt" a Blue Box for Books, contact Heather Cousins at 433-8996 ext. 224.

Summer-time fun is on the way and that includes many activities here at Investing in Children. Our staff have been very busy getting ready for the Creative Cities Conference June 8 & 9, our Fun at the Frog Event June 22 and planning for a Book Camp for Children August 15-19 , to highlight a few of our upcoming projects. Summer is also a time for us to revisit all of our existing programs and projects and plan for the coming year.

We have also celebrated many successes the past few months. The Track and Field Event for Special Olympic Athletes was outstanding and we have our community supporters and volunteers to thank for that. Your contributions enabled over 800 athletes and their peer mentors to experience a fun filled 3 days! Our Family Literacy Events, Kids First Day and our on going programs offered new opportunities and experiences to many children in our community.

To all of you, have a safe and enjoyable summer and thank you for your continued interest and support of Investing in Children.

Sincerely
Anita Gilvesy
Executive Director

Do you like food, drinks, auctions, prizes, live entertainment, and the opportunity to celebrate another great year of achievements?

What a coincidence, so do we!

Investing in Children celebrates our third annual Fun at the Frog on June 22 at the Barking Frog and we want you to join us. This evening enables us to celebrate everything we have accomplished with our community partners and supporters who have helped to make our work possible.

Once again this year, the live and silent auctions are shaping up to be very exciting. The auction will be highlighted by four return-trip tickets on VIA Rail anywhere on the Windsor to Quebec corridor. Last year's most talked about item, 50 cubic meters of compost from Try Recycling will also be back on the block. Other prizes include golf for four at Riverbend, a water fountain, spa packages, dinner certificates, toys, family fun and a whole lot more!

Tickets for Fun at the Frog are only $50 each, and include a $25 tax receipt. To order your tickets, please call Heather Cousins at 433-8996 ext. 224 or click here to e-mail.

This summer, 48 London students will take a major step towards fulfilling their dreams of a career in book publishing.

Presented by Investing in Children and the London Public Library, Book Camp London will give these students ages 10-12 the opportunity to enjoy creative sessions with award-winning authors and illustrators. Activities will include brainstorming ideas, writing, cartooning, illustrating and self-editing. Camp counsellors will guide the small groups of children through their workshops and other activities each day.

Investing in Children and the London Public Library would like to thank the Ontario Endowment for Children & Youth in Recreation Fund, a fund within the London Community Foundation for it's support of our Book Camp London.

Book Camp London takes place August 15-19, 2005 at the London Public Library, 251 Dundas St. For more information, or to download a registration form, visit www.investinginchildren.on.ca or www.londonpubliclibrary.ca

This spring, Investing in Children coordinated twenty Family Literacy Events in five public schools in London and area as a special project for the Thames Valley District School Board. The series targeted children in JK through grade three and their families. It was truly a collaborative effort involving our partners, the Thames Valley District School Board, the London Public Library, Super Pet, the London Museum of Archaeology, Let’s Talk Science! and Storybook Gardens. And of course we couldn’t do it without the assistance from our volunteers, many of whom are pre-service teachers from Althouse College and Early Childhood Educators from Fanshawe College.

Literacy is a critical educational issue. It affects a child’s learning, self-esteem, and long-term success. Our family-focused series promoted literacy for the whole family in order to enrich homes and engage minds both young and old. Each Family Literacy Event offered children and parents an array of fun, educational activities, take-home materials, and resources for parents. Nutritious snacks and juice were provided to fuel active children. Book marks, magnets, prizes and crafts ensure that each child goes home with something in hand at the end of each Family Literacy Evening.

To stimulate a love for learning, each Family Literacy Evening is based on a theme: the ocean, bugs, the rain forest, and dinosaurs. The children have had a blast while learning and growing. According to feedback from parents and school staff, the Family Literacy series has been an unqualified success!
