Newsflash

We're on the move!

A number of factors - a change in current leasing arrangements, our need for an in-house meeting room, and better temperature and air control (remember the long, hot summer!) - all pointed to a new home for Investing in Children. We've found an excellent solution to our requirements and will move on Nov 22 to:

795 Wonderland Rd. S., Suite 103
London, Ontario
N6K 3C2
(corner of Wonderland & Viscount)

Investing in Children's phone and fax numbers will remain the same.

Watch for notice about a holiday open house on December 13 and come see our new space!

Lies, Damn Lies and Statistics

According to a recent report from the Canadian Council on Social Development, child poverty and hunger are on the increase. In 1996, the last year for which data was available, 75,000 families with children under 12 reported being hungry. This represented an increase of one third from from 1994.

The study also found that wealthier families are getting wealthier, while poorer families are getting poorer. From 1984-1999, the average net wealth of the top 20 per cent of families increased by 43 per cent, the middle 20% increased by 3 per cent, while the lowest 20 per cent declined by more than 51 per cent.

For more information from this study, read the Council's The Progress of Canada's Children 2002.

Book Review Winner

Beginning in October, students in the Kids Count Homework Clubs are taking part in an exciting new contest. Each month, the students can write a book review, with the best review receiving a Chapters gift certificate.

The October 2002 winner was Courtney Schram, a Grade 7 student at Bishop Townsend, for her review of Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH by Robert C. O'Brien. She gave the book 5 out of 5, saying "It was neat because it was seeing the world through a mouse's eyes."

"The ultimate leader is one who is willing to develop people to the point that they eventually surpass him or her in knowledge and ability."
-Fred A. Manske, Jr.

Welcome

November is a busy month at Investing in Children, as we have just concluded our highly-successful conference, Fast Forward: The Possibilities for Leadership, and now we begin boxing up for the big move. We start off this month's E-mailer with a review of The Art of Possibility by Rosamund Zander, the keynote speaker at Fast Forward. We are also pleased to feature an article contributed by a member of Investing in Children's Council of Partners, Bill Clunas. "Your Kids and Money" offers tips and suggestions for involving children in the family's financial planning. Finally, we are happy to present the winners of the It Starts with Kids Business Awards. Five London businesses were selected for their outstanding family-friendly practices.

We are constantly looking for exciting new stories and ideas that will be of interest to you, the reader. If you would like to write an article for the E-mailer, or suggest a topic for an article, please e-mail it to info@investinginchildren.on.ca.

The Art of Possibility

Drawn from the lifetime experiences of Rosamund Stone Zander, an acclaimed speaker and organizational coach, and Benjamin Zander, the conductor of the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra, The Art of Possibility offers 13 strategies for finding and embracing possibility in any endeavour. These strategies, when explained, may seem quite simple; the true magic of this book is in the way the Zanders demonstrate that very subtle shifts in thinking can change any losing situation into one with endless possibilities.

As the title intimates, The Art of Possibility is about possibilities: how to recognize them, how to create them, and how to make the most of them. The book contains thirteen "practices", each a unique strategy for retraining your mind to see the world differently. The Zanders strive to teach their readers to rethink their assumptions and to seek out possibilities for success in even the bleakest situations. Each practice is enhanced by anecdotes from history, folklore and the Zander's unique personal experiences. The personal stories, in particular, bring an exuberance to the lessons, often times taking the reader to the very moment that vague ideas crystallized into a practice.

What are some of the Zanders' practices? Click here.

Investing in Children has a limited number of copies of The Art of Possibility available for $20. If you are interested in purchasing a copy, please e-mail info@investinginchildren.on.ca.

Your Kids and Money
Give them the answers they need

submitted by Bill Clunas, Investors Group

It's only natural - you want the best for your kids. That's why you prepare them for life by nurturing positive personal and family relationships, encouraging them to pursue a good and relevant education, and helping them develop the skills and abilities they'll need to succeed. And, while it's true money can't buy happiness, you know it's also true that the lack of money can create real problems for them, like being burdened by debt, unable to pay their bills or afford the accommodation they want -- maybe even being unable to have and support a family of their own.

Like it or not, your kids' ability to earn, acquire, and manage money will have a profound effect on their lifestyle and their ability to achieve personal goals. But, when they're equipped with the right knowledge, skills and experience, they will be better able to take control of their financial affairs.

How do you give your children the best start on the road to financial freedom? Click here.

In addition to being a best-selling author, speaker and organizational consultant, Rosamund Zander is also an accomplished landscape artist. Says the Boston Globe: "Her studies are modest, firmly structured and scrupulously painted. The palette suggests the predominant smoky greens, grays and browns of a Courbet, but the accent of primary color In a meadow or orchard often lends the scene optical sparkle. The artist knows how to subtly entice the eye Into the composition via a winding path, and how to balance terrain and sky, and a harmony between formal elements leads to successful pictorial treatments."

In October 2002, five outstanding London businesses were recognized for their outstanding family-friendly practices through the It Starts with Kids Business Awards. As the detailed descriptions below will outline, not only are there many individuals and businesses committed to improving the lives of children, but there are just as many different and unique ways to make a difference.

And the winners are…

Investing in Children, through It Starts with Kids and the Special Friends of Children Awards, recognizes businesses that adopt family-friendly practices, both for their customers and their employees.
